Born in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, in 1967, Rafel Bestard graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona in 1991 and, that same year, completed a postgraduate diploma in Drawing and Its Applications at the Polytechnic University of Barcelona. His artistic education was further shaped through seminars on the theory and history of contemporary art at the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, the Juan March Foundation, and Casal Solleric (1995–1998), as well as through a series of painting workshops led by Antonio López at the Francisco de Goya Chair (Ávila), the Casa Ibáñez Museum (Olula del Río), and the Ciudad de Albacete Chair between 2011 and 2017.

Alongside his artistic practice, Bestard has developed an ongoing philosophical investigation into aesthetics, with a particular focus on the phenomenology of painting. His research examines painting not merely as a visual language but as an embodied mode of thought, grounded in perception, experience, and the lived act of making. In 2024, he completed a Master’s degree in Philosophy at the University of the Balearic Islands, where he consolidated the theoretical foundations of this research. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Philosophy, with a dissertation devoted to the phenomenology of pictorial praxis.

Working across painting, drawing, and installation, Bestard’s practice explores the subtle relationships between memory, landscape, perception, and the passage of time. His work invites a contemplative encounter with the world, where image and experience unfold through a sustained attention to light, atmosphere, and the phenomenological conditions of seeing.
