Paul Riedmüller

Biography

Born in 1989 in Graz, Austria, I currently live and work in Vienna. My background in visual arts began with studies in Graphic Design and Communication at HTBLVA Ortweinschule in Graz, where I graduated in 2009. I later continued my education at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, specializing in painting and animation film under the guidance of Judith Eisler, and completed my studies in 2017. Alongside my individual practice, I am also a member of SOYBOT, a Vienna-based print and micro-publishing collective.

My work unfolds at the intersection of human and artificial intelligence, where traditional craftsmanship meets contemporary technology. Through this combination, I explore how painting can evolve beyond its established limits and respond to the visual languages of our time. Collage is at the heart of my process: I collect fragments from diverse image sources and assemble them into new, condensed compositions. This act of layering and editing is guided by a meditative, intuitive approach, allowing unexpected connections to emerge.

A subtle sense of humor and playfulness runs through my work, as I question and reinterpret the codes of contemporary visual culture. I am particularly interested in how images occupy space and how their physical presence can extend beyond the two-dimensional surface. By merging painting and sculpture, I create dynamic environments where spatial and pictorial dimensions collapse into one another, inviting viewers to reflect on the shifting relationship between art, technology, and human creativity.
