Maite y Manuel

Biography

Maite García(1996) and Manuel Puig (1991). Born in Uruguay, currently living and working in Mallorca.

Anthropomorphic characters occupy their drawings and paintings, like a kind of animated series that narrates fragments of their own lives and emotions.

For Maite y Manuel, everything must start with – a drawing on a sketchbook – the core of their practice; in which they work simultaneously and without speaking. In a rapid, chaotic rhythm that somehow avoids collision, they embrace messiness, imperfection and shared intuition.

Drawings from the sketchbook are translated into canvas as a structure for painting and material experimentation. They pursuit a kind of painting that appears to be forever in motion, eternally wet.

a drawing on a sketchbook
a big rudimentary line drawing
come closer
see the dirt
you are looking at me
defects
spit out read spit out again fuck it up read
checkmate
indulge and suffer
wet dry wet dry wet dry
forget putting the lid on the pot of paint
sticky smooth wrinkly gelatinous smelly sexy
the greatest pleasures often come from the most revolting things
a badly stretched canvas feels really good
rotten candy you find on the street a week after halloween
also plastic
I’m in love with plastic
paint today tomorrow it’s ready
immediate cheap easy
it’s the year 2025
I want to do something
I just want to
it’s a waste of time to try to understand
you think my painting looks like a comic
guess what
I never read one
but I did watch a lot of tv
I don’t know much about anything really
but I do know pleasure and feeling
