THE GREEN FOG

The exhibition project “The Green Fog” is an open invitation for viewers to become active co-creators of new narratives using seven triptychs and a sound piece. Instead of merely observing, the audience is encouraged to question conventional storytelling through experimental techniques such as cut-up and montage—methods borrowed from experimental cinema and applied to painting—to blur the lines between reality and fiction.

José Fiol’s work, featured in room D of Es Baluard Museu, revitalizes forgotten or discarded images by recycling them into new cultural, historical, and emotional contexts. This approach stands in stark contrast to today’s rapid consumption of images in advertising and social media, inviting a reflective, ethical reexamination of visual culture.

The exhibition creates a dialogue between two seemingly disparate events: the iconic 1975 Wimbledon final—where Arthur Ashe, through a carefully measured strategy, made history as the first African American champion—and Guy Maddin’s experimental film “The Green Fog” (2017), which reinterprets Hitchcock’s Vertigo through a fragmented, non-linear narrative. By juxtaposing the strategic subtleties of that historic tennis match with the cinematic collage of film clips, the project highlights themes of memory, nostalgia, and the transformative power of reinterpretation. Ultimately, it challenges the audience to reconstruct historical and cinematic narratives, making art a collaborative process where personal experience reshapes meaning.
