STILL PAINTING

Painting begins as a quiet resistance. It unfolds slowly, in the time of the hand and the patience of the gaze, where matter, gesture, and attention shape an image that cannot be hurried. Each brushstroke follows its own rhythm, resisting the speed of endless images and immediate consumption.

In this practice, the painting remains at the center. It is not a message to decode, but a presence that invites time and attention. The encounter between the artwork and the viewer becomes part of the work itself – a moment where meaning is not fixed in advance but emerges through looking, through presence, through the shared space between the painting and the person who stands before it.

These encounters are quiet and singular. They do not seek spectacle or explanation, but allow a subtle closeness to form, where the painting continues to reveal itself in each attentive gaze. What arises is not a final interpretation, but a lived experience that grows from the meeting between artwork and viewer.

In an age of rapid images and constant consumption, this return to material, slowness, and presence becomes a gentle form of resistance. Painting persists not by competing with new media, but by sustaining a space where seeing can happen again – where a painting and a person can truly meet.

Rafel Bestard continues painting, and the art world should celebrate it.
