Muscle failure is a concept in fitness that refers to the point at which muscle fibers are no longer able to generate enough force to overcome the resistance of a load—making it impossible to complete another repetition. This state of exhaustion triggers a spike in growth hormone during the recovery phase, encouraging physical development.

In the same way that an athlete pushes their body to failure to stimulate growth, Nauzet Mayor seeks to push beyond limits—striving for a result that validates the effort and offers insight into new directions. This project emerges from a moment of rest, an in-between space that follows the completion of one stage and precedes the beginning of another.

The body has long been the epicenter of the artist’s practice, and it continues to serve as the foundation for this new phase. The various parts of the body act as seeds for transformation—expanding, evolving, and giving rise to new life and phenomena. This time, however, the narrative moves beyond the artist’s personal experience, shifting instead toward a contemplation of the duality between temporality and eternity.

Starting from the body as a central motif, the artist constructs a narrative anchored in symbolic phenomena that connect the viewer to the present moment—the here and now. To do so, he has created a set of sculptural pieces that represent the body: head, torso, and limbs. Each part exists within its own orbit, interacting with other assembled elements and generating an autonomous narrative.

Metaphorically, “reaching failure” also evokes breakdown, error, or the cessation of function—suggesting the behavior of a self-contained body that operates without external support. In this sense, the project references physical ailments as consequences of repetition, particularly in the context of artistic practice.

The outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has added another layer of meaning to the project, already centered on the body’s biochemical and physiological processes. The idea of latent life—microorganisms living in symbiosis with or in service of more complex organisms—is expressed through moss, textures, and foreign elements integrated into the sculptures. The body is revived, but it is no longer the same: it now hosts other life forms beyond human control—bacteria, fungi, and more.

Visually, the work resembles a kind of contemporary sculpture garden—a space that continually brings us back to the origin of all suffering and pleasure: the body itself. Through the creation of an immersive environment, the viewer encounters the pieces in a way that breaks from traditional exhibition formats. The works are experienced in a space of isolation, generating a sense that something is happening in real time—something witnessed only by those present with each piece in that specific moment.
